Deploy Mattermost on Your VPS

Deploy Mattermost on your VPS in one click. Self-hosted team chat — an open-source Slack alternative with channels, threads, and integrations, paired with PostgreSQL.

Mattermost is the open-source team chat platform teams move to when they want Slack without the per-seat bill or the data leaving their infrastructure. Channels, threads, direct messages, file sharing, search, custom emoji, webhooks, and slash commands are all there, and the official desktop and mobile apps connect straight to your own server.

Vessl deploys Mattermost alongside a dedicated PostgreSQL service, networked together with persistent volumes for messages, uploads, and configuration. The first account you register becomes the system admin. After attaching your domain, set the Site URL in the System Console so links, notifications, and real-time updates resolve correctly.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Slack?

Mattermost is open source and self-hosted, so there is no per-seat subscription and your messages stay on your own server. The interface, channels, and threads will feel immediately familiar to Slack users.

How do I become the admin?

The first account you register on a fresh install automatically becomes the system administrator, who can manage teams, users, and every setting in the System Console.

Do I need to set a Site URL?

Yes — after binding your domain in the Vessl dashboard, set the Site URL in the System Console. Mattermost uses it to build links in notifications and to establish the websocket connection for real-time updates.
